A friend asked me for tips on Spain
My Tips for Spain:
- La Tomatina is sometime in the end of this month. Giant tomato fight in Valencia
- 1 week long surf/camping trip down the Portuguese coast: http://www.surf-portugal.com/surf/portugal/surfsafari.html
- The gardens at Granada are amazing
- The guggenhaim is a bit overrated, but if you’re going through bilbao it’s worth a stop
- Barcelona is unmissable. Spend as much time as possible in this city.
- Malaga is sleepy compared to Madrid/BCN, but serves as a good hoping point to all stops costa del sol. Including Morocco.
My Tips for Madrid:
- Take in a Flamenco show, Las Tablas was my favorite joint in Madrid in 05. Cheap too, a 2 hour show was ~30 euro. http://www.lastablasmadrid.com/
- Bullfights. Such a brutal and savage display of athletic risk is life-changing. I wrote the following after seeing one: “All in all it was a soul-tearing, heart-breaking, amazing experience. The oddest part was our group ranged from hating it to loving it, but it was so eye opening that none regretted going.” I’d go again in a heartbeat.
- Naturbier is a bar with some pretty solid beer/cool place to chill out. Madrid’s only micro-brewery (or so I was sold).
